Monochord Buying Guide — How to Choose a monochord

Ready to learn all about feeltone Monochords?

This four-part video guide was created for sound creators just like you — after speaking with countless customers over many years. It will walk you through everything you need to know to choose your ideal feeltone monochord with confidence.

Part 1: Is a Monochord Right for Me?

A monochord is a multi-stringed therapeutic instrument used for relaxation, sound healing, sound massage, and music therapy. Its deeply resonant, harmonically rich sound makes it ideal for:

  • Anyone seeking relaxation and self-care through sound
  • Sound practitioners, music therapists, and sound bath facilitators
  • Yogis, sound meditation leaders, and kirtan facilitators
  • Music composers, performers, and intuitive musical artists

Before you buy, keep in mind: monochords are stringed instruments that require regular tuning and maintenance, and long fingernails may limit your playing technique.

Part 2: Monolina or Monolini — What's the Difference?

Both the feeltone Monolina and Monolini are portable monochords designed for sound therapy, sound massage, and sound meditation. They share the same 5 tuning options. The Monolina also includes 5 accent melody strings on bridges that can be tuned to either a major or minor pentatonic scale, adding melodic versatility to your practice.

Overtone Strings 20 10
Bass Strings 5 5
Fifth Strings 5 5
Bridges 5 included None

Part 3: How to Choose Your Tuning

Both the Monolina and Monolini are available in 5 tunings: A, C, D, F, and G. Each tuning is built around three notes — a root, an octave, and a fifth — creating a naturally resonant, harmonically rich sound. While the instrument body is identical across models, each tuning uses a unique set of strings designed by feeltone's specialist string manufacturer.

Tuning Root Octave Fifth
C c C g
A a A e
G g G d
F f F c
D d D a

Not sure which tuning to choose? Here's a simple guide:

  • Choose by vocal range — sing along with our tuning recordings to find which key feels most natural for your voice
  • Choose by instruments you already own — match or complement what you have
  • Choose by feel — C and G feel grounded and open; A and D feel more intimate; F sits warm and mid-range

→ Listen to longer individual recordings of all 5 tunings

Note: these recordings are tuned to 440 Hz, but you may easily tune your instrument to 432Hz if preferred.

Part 4: Combining Two Monochords

Already have one and ready for a second? Across the 5 tunings there are 10 possible two-monochord combinations. The 4 most harmonious pairings — because they share only 3 notes between them — are:

  • A + D
  • D + G
  • F + C
  • C + G

The remaining combinations produce 4 notes between them and create a slightly more complex, dissonant sound when played together.
