  • The Sansula renaissance are also available with a B11 ( G-major) tuning: Sansula Renaissance Melody

The default tuning for our Sansulas is 440Hz A-minor.

Looking for a different tuning to match your other instruments, we do offer our Sansulas in all of the Soundscape tunings A-minor, F-Major, D-minor and C-Major in either 432Hz or 440Hz.

How the Sansula gives you creative permission

Last month's Kalimba Campfire virtual gathering featured Broadway Composer, Performer, and performance coach Will Reynolds, said an instrument such as a Sansula is a "key for unlocking creative permissions". 

Why is a Sansula soo great for this? Because with a limited number of notes, it actually encourages creativity.

It’s always thrilling to us when composers and multi-instrumentals who already have massive instrument collections are surprised and delighted working with our instruments! Our friend Matt Levine just added the Hokema Kalimba Sansula Deluxe to his compositional toolbox.

Read on to watch a fun tutorial video on how he personally 

approaches the Sansula, how anyone can instantly make music with it, and how playing the two rows of metal tines are for him like the "inhale and exhale" of each breath. He then demonstrates playing the Sansula (tuned to A minor) with a tango rhythm.

On March 5th, 2025 on our Kalimba Campfire online meetup, we were absolutely enchanted by our featured guest Sri Kala who wowed us with a 30-minute free-form set where he improvised layers of voice over his Hokema Sansula using a live looper.

Sansula Fun with the Singing Zoologist

Man, oh, man: must watch!

The Singing Zoologist befriended us when he started using Sansulas in his children's educational video channel "Science Up!" on YouTube. It was then we discovered his puppet masterpiece music video: The Cheetah Song. Basically a video teaching kids about the hunting habits of carnivores, it's a silly delight from beginning to end and a profound-play work of puppetry art.

Masterful Mbira Player Kevin Nathaniel's Insight on Circular Kalimba Playing

We've been honored to have NYC-based musical artist Kevin Nathaniel join us twice now as special guest for the Kalimba Campfire meetup. Each time Kevin brings a wealth of insight to share with us about traditional mbira playing from Africa, and the various styles of instruments, tuning, and playing techniques with roots in different African countries that influenced the Kalimba from Hokema that we bring to the United States.
