Mallika Paratosh invites us find intimacy in sound
On February 24th, 2025, we met up online with a very special guest who joined our Monochord Monday Meetup live from Lisbon, Portugal: Mallika Paritosh. Originally from Argentina, Mallika began as a classical pianist in the conservatory who later found her freedom of expression as a multi-instrumentalist traveling the world as a musical artist, researcher, teacher, and event producer.
Mallika shared with us her concept of "sound intimacy" which involves deep listening and intimate communion with the sounds one sets into motion. The group will be invited to play together on your instruments at home using this invitation. Mallika also spoke of the concept of "sound as refuge" - a place where we can go into the sound and take solace from the things in the world we cannot control, and how important conscious community is in these times we're living in now.
We then got a behind-the-scenes tour of her elaborate sound studio with her vast instrument collection, including many gongs and other intuitive instruments (beautifully lit and decorated!) We also get a peek inside her magical grotto: an ancient cave with running water that makes a sound as it drips down a fountain inside a structure that dates back to the 15th centruty in Lisbon, Portugal.
We edited together a special version of this Webinar we could share publicly, as Mallika's story, her monochord playing, and her poetry we knew would be so inspiring to our Monochord Player community.
With a running time of about 40 minutes, we encourage you to watch it here now:
Mallika wrote a poem especially for this online event, which she reads and accompanies herself on monochord during the video. She gave us permission to share it here with you in print form. We invite you to read it aloud to yourself to take its depth and mystery:
In a place without form,
in a time unbound by limits,
there, you meet your beloved,
the sound, each time you awaken
the ancient gesture of drawing from silence
the beauty of what vibrates,
what is alive.
What dance have you shared?
What inexplicable emotion has blossomed in your heart?
What mystery of their essence has been sown within you?
These are memories that never fade,
Seeds that will unexpectedly flourish within you,
in the rhythms of your daily life.
A joyful tremor that suddenly stirs in your body,
the echo of your beloved.
Always within you.
Always within you.
