Intro to Monochord Live Online Training

The power of overtones & natural acoustic vibration for Sound Meditation, Sound Baths, and Sound Journeys

with official USA feeltone Trainer Joule L’Adara, MFA in Music

In this intimate online retreat, you’ll join a small group of just 2–6 participants for two days of deep, focused learning from the comfort of your own space. You’ll discover how to:

  • Refine your finger technique to draw out the richest, most resonant harmonics
  • Find the ideal balance of glide, pressure, and speed
  • Learn the 5 monochord playing parameters
  • Explore two distinct styles of playing:

    • Meditative Style for grounding, spacious sound meditations
    • Evocative Style for guiding dynamic sound journeys
  • Learn about the origins of the monochord and the feeltone company, plus basic monochord maintenance including tuning techniques, cleaning, storage, and how to change a string

Through a series of guided explorations, you’ll practice on your own instrument at home—while receiving real-time feedback, support, and inspiration from both your instructor and your fellow participants. And while anyone can strum a monochord, there are skillful ways of playing it that will bring about deeper transformational experiences in your listeners.

This is a high-value online experience, and instructor Joule L'Adara has a collection of 12 monochords with an elaborate sound system including an overhead stereo room mic, vocal mic, and contact mics on every monochord connected to a mixer to optimize the sound so you may hear the nuances of these delicate instruments through your headphones on Zoom. As a bonus Joule also delivers a video recording of her monochord "Sound Immersion" so that you may be inspired by the potential of the sounds of combining multiple monochords together.

Though nothing compares to our IRL trainings, this virtual retreat offers an affordable option to go deeper with this instrument for those who don't currently have the time or resources to travel.

Note: you must own a monochord to be able to participate as you'll be lead through live exercises from the comfort of your home.

    How I De-Stress with Monochord

In this introspective piece by Feeltone Trainer Joule L'Adara, the transformative power of sound and monochord practice is explored as a profound method for navigating challenging times. Beginning 2020 with optimism, Joule's world turned inward with the onset of the pandemic, leading to an enhanced sensory experience and deeper internal life amidst isolation. The importance of daily practices, particularly movement, sound, and voice, became paramount, serving not just as routines but as essential tools for mental and emotional survival.

Joule discusses the necessity of acknowledging the body's alarm signals during real danger and the benefits of engaging directly with these signals for true comfort and action. The piece also touches on the Iso Principle from music therapy, which suggests meeting a person's current emotional state with matching sound rhythms, then gradually moving them to a more relaxed state. Joule describes using the monochord to express a range of emotions vigorously before transitioning to more soothing, meditative playing, illustrating a process of emotional release and calming that mirrors this principle.

A guided 15-minute monochord practice is offered, starting with 5 minutes of expressive, passionate play, followed by 5 minutes of transitioning to steady, calming rhythms, and concluding with 5 minutes of silent meditation. This practice is recommended daily for coping with stress and difficulty, underscoring the monochord's role as a therapeutic instrument for emotional expression and healing.

How do you learn how to play an “intuitive” instrument?

Feeltone US Trainer Joule L'Adara shares insights from her transformative experience with the "Secrets of the Monochord" training, emphasizing the deeper connection and mindfulness achieved through playing the feeltone Monolina. Despite her extensive musical and therapeutic background, attending the workshop revealed the importance of presence and listening beyond mere playing techniques.

The training, created by Martina Gläser, delves into the subtleties of sound energy and its therapeutic effects, focusing on attunement and the capacity to receive. L'Adara highlights the workshop's emphasis on discerning subtle energy shifts and co-creating with the instrument, marking a shift from performance to partnership with the monochord. The course offers a comprehensive exploration of the monochord, including care, tuning, and therapeutic applications, but prioritizes the experiential process of engaging with sound as a pathway to mindfulness and energy transmission.

The experience underscores the universal value of the monochord in teaching mindfulness and the profound impact of shared harmonic vibrations in group settings.
