The tuning of the Kalimba B9 is identical to that of the Sansula. It is in A-minor with additional tines tuned to B and F. Because all the notes harmonize, beginners can easily pick it up and start playing.

default Tuning A-minor: A, C, C, A, A, F, E, E, H

Amplify the sound by placing the kalimba on a flat surface such as a table or on top of a drum.

The B9( nine tines) is the ‘sister’ model of the B7 (seven tines) Kalimba. Both have the same sized wooden block, but the tines of the B9 are slimmer than the B7. This gives the B9 a more overtone rich sound compared with the B7, which has more vibration instead.

Tunning, Books & Tunning Tools

The Sansula  book covers a total of 14 different tunings and can be used for the Sansula and the B9.

Every tuning contains numerous musical possibilities.

The scope and Dynamic goes from dreamy slow, or bluesy-cool to powerful virtuosic. Genres from Folk , Singer/Songwriter to Celtic Pop and Bluegrass ar covered.

The 18 pieces presented in this book, will give you examples both on how to use the Kalimba to accompany other instruments and to play the Kalimba as the lead melody instrument.

In the audio section of this book, each piece is presented on the CD as a play-along -version in a slow tempo, as well as a recording of a band version in the original tempo played solely by acoustic instruments.

Every notated exercise is available as a MP3 file, on the MP3-CD as well as in the corresponding online-library. Numerous external video and audio examples, linked by QR codes, will give you a deeper insight into the presented material

We have compiled a couple of videos showing you different tuning flavors and how to tune steps, for your B9 or Sansulas.

The tuning tool has an indention on the top so you can securely place it at the end of the tine. Then it won't slide when you use a hammer to tap the tuning tool and push the tines in or out.
We show you how its done in the videos plus you get to hear the different tuning suggestions.

Sweet Sound

My first experience with a Hokema Kalimba was at the gift shop of the Music Instrument Museum in Phoenix, AZ. I was blown away by the big, beautiful sound of those instruments, but I wasn’t ready to plunk down $200 for it.

Fast forward, I read about the Twin Kalimba and was encouraged by a review that suggested it was great for events. This particular person, evidently a musician like me, gave out ten of these during his shows and was thrilled by how the audience members enjoyed the experience.

So, given these two experiences, I had high hopes for the twin.

It is a sweet sounding instrument, but the sound is very quiet. The wood is solid so it doesn’t resonate like its higher priced solo cousins (that feature a resonator) or traditional kalimbas that have found holes.

So, I’m a little underwhelmed by the sound, but it’s still a great concept. Perhaps it will be fine and dandy when I share it with audiences. Let’s see!

Hokema B9 Kalimba Aria

I was pleased with customer service & by the work ethic that this company has. This is my first kalimba that I have ever owned. It is easy to make pretty little melodies & pairs well with the chime of the same key, but admittedly the kalimba sounds louder & sweeter when held & played so it works better when these instruments are played by 2 people. Overall I was pleased with my purchase.

Fun and super easy to play
