Huaca, a 3-chamber clay ocarina
One chamber is a drone with one finger hole, and the other two chambers have three plus one finger holes of the same notes. The mouthpiece on the top has three holes, and you can play each chamber separately or together. The sound is warm, airy, and haunting. You need quite a bit of air to play it, and lots of practice.
The ways to play this beautiful instrument are limitless. You can add gentle tapping to the chambers to add percussion. Due to the echoes and the way it’s played, the player can almost feel like being inside the instrument.
The maker is a Bay Area-based Nash Tavewa. Hi was born in a remote community in Oaxaca, Mexico. He is a member of the Bene Walash, a deeply traditional Indigenous community. He comes from a long lineage of master ceramic artists in traditional Zapotec pottery. Check from his website how this instrument can be played https://www.flutesbynash.com/ocarinas-and-whistles.
