Sansula Basic Kalimba – Delicate, Dreamy Sound in A Minor

  • Ethereal, floating sound with a rich 'wah-wah' effect — produced by holding the instrument against your body, thigh, or tabletop while playing and moving it up and down
  • A-minor tuning with additional tines pitched at B and F: a´, c´´, c´, a´, a, f´, e´, e´´, b´ — no wrong notes, all tones work harmonically together
  • Delicate membrane design — suitable for adults; for a sturdier option consider the Sansula Renaissance or the tunable Sansula Deluxe
  • High quality materials: Cherrywood resonating block, laminated beechwood frame
  • Size: 7.8 x 6.1 x 2.6 inches
  • Add a fitted Kalimba Softbag to protect your Sansula on the road

The Sansula belongs to the family of the Kalimba and can be played just as easily. The instrument, with its patented suspended mounting of the resonating block, is an innovation entirely of Hokema's own design. Since its launch in 2001, the Sansula has quickly become a bestseller and found thousands of fans at home and abroad.

The special feature of the Sansula is its unbelievable sound. The oval frame of laminated beechwood is fitted with a membrane which, together with the resonating block, produces a prolonged, soft tone. An impressive 'wah-wah' effect can be produced by holding the instrument against the body, on the thigh, or laying it on a table and then alternately raising and lowering it while playing.

The A-minor tuning allows even beginners to create melodies — there is no wrong note, all notes work together harmonically.

Watch & Listen: Tuning Videos

We have compiled videos showing you different tuning options and how to tune your Sansula step by step. The Tuning Tool has an indented tip so you can securely place it at the end of the tine — it won't slip when you tap it with a hammer to push the tines in or out.

Sansula Book

Hokema Sansula tuning book cover

The Sansula Book covers 14 different tunings and can be used for both the Sansula and the B9 Kalimba.

Every tuning contains numerous musical possibilities. The scope ranges from dreamy and slow, to bluesy-cool, to powerful and virtuosic — covering genres from Folk, Singer/Songwriter, Celtic Pop, and Bluegrass.

The 18 pieces in this book demonstrate how to use the Kalimba both as an accompanying instrument and as the lead melody instrument. Each piece is available as a play-along version at slow tempo, plus a full band recording at original tempo. Every exercise is available as an MP3 file on the included MP3-CD and in the corresponding online library. QR codes throughout the book link to additional video and audio examples.

Ethereal beauty!

I am really enjoying this beautifully crafted instrument. It is the perfect accompaniment to my softly spoken meditation and journey work prompts. Just wish I had purchased a case when I ordered.
